Default Trying to get into high level PvP...need help

hey guys, i have been playing Guild Wars since prophecies came out. I've played RA, but never can figure out some basic principles:

1. Is there such a thing as a Universal Guild Wars PvP control Scheme (something that is easy to use and has every key mapped to keyboard keys)? I like using my Assassin/Warrior and also my Monk/Mesmer, I use keyboard only and have skills 1-8 on my numpad, and target next and target previous set to tab and Q, this works well with my A/W but not well with my Mo/Me since i cant select teammates efficiently. I don't want to remap my keyboard every time I feel like switching chars.

2. Do the top Guilds in PvP play only 1-2 types of characters eg. offensive (targeting enemies only with maybe the occasional rez)/defensive (as in teammate targeters) casters only, physical hitters ? I'm well versed in using all the different classes, should I only be using one character class and not switching primaries all the time?

Yeah...thats it for now. I wish I could see (as in watching their hands move and the gameplay at the same time split screen) how the top players play to get a better understanding of how they communicate, manipulate their keyboard when they use their mouse, how they decide to move out of the way eg. clicking with their mouse or going with wads. I'm good at Vs. Fighters and I would like to get good at this also any suggestion would be most useful.

It all comes down to preference. Most players that I know select party members with the mouse, and I have no clue why you aren't using a mouse.

If you ask many players, they will all have their own methods and ways, and you just have to find what feels comfortable for you.

Also, generally, you should be able to play every character to at least some degree of efficiency, with possible specialization in a couple of roles. Also, you shouldn't classify characters into defensive/offensive that much, for almost every character can/should be able to play defensively or offensively. for instance, a warrior can do his job offensively or he can come back to chase their warriors away or mess with the other team's dom mesmers or offensive casters to play defensively. Almost every character has the capability to do both (exceptions are monks, maybe other specialized roles).

Eh don't worry about how you use your keyboard (just a pre-up because a lot of people will likely respond preaching there way is the best...). Just stick with what you are used to, you normally lose more changing styles than you gain. Things like "infusers need to num pad" and such is just silly preferences.

The only two classes that people tend to specialize in are Warrior and Monk (and consequentially those are the two most developed classes in GW I think). Although it is really nice to be dominate in one class, you will be a much better player if you don't specialize. Playing multiple positions teaches a lot about the game and will boost your play.

As for the offensive versus defense, being dead set on one really isn't a direction you want to go. All characters in a build should be designed to help the team both offensive and defensively. I am not saying play bspike or something :P but a monk with pdrain taking out an Aegis/draining a PS or a warrior using kds to give the monks a breather can go a long way.

Edit: Sry to repeat some of the stuff you said Mephisto, posted at the same time.

I know many players map skills q,e,r,1-5. I map q,e 1-6 mousing 5 with 6 as the rez. You need to map strafe to a,d and turn/target using your mouse.

If you refuse to mouse, you can map skills to your number pad. You have your 6, 7,8 skills on 0, enter, + which leaves all your skills readily available without mapping onto q,e or any of the number skills. I have my spike save mapped to the "0" so it is readily available when I'm keyboarding.

I use: 1-8 for skills, F1-F4 for wep swapping, Num1-Num9 for allies. Simple, really

I've just left it default, since that's what I started playing with it's what I'm most comfortable with. I 1-5 with my fingers, and 6-8 with my mouse. Pretty simple.

- I think Guild Wars is too complex to simply have "Offensive" and "Defensive" toons. A Spirit spamming Ritualist can still help spike with Doom (as an example).

- I'd definitely get used to using a mouse (lol), it makes things a lot easier.

- I've heard a lot from people to stick to one or two different classes, but I like playing all of them... every class has something fun you can do with em.

- If you want to get into PvP, join a PvP oriented guild, if you're not in one already. I wouldn't recommend PUGing HA to anyone, as it'd be pretty frustrating.
